Wot No Dairy? Raspberry Dessert

First Impression

Whilst browsing the shelves the brightly coloured tub of  “Wot No Dairy? Raspberry Dessert” caught my eye.  The packaging stated that the dessert was made with non-dairy cultured pea protein and was soya free.  I had never heard of non-dairy cultured pea protein before so I thought we would give this a try.

The Verdict

When I removed the foil lid I was a bit surprised at the colour of the dessert.  I had anticipated the dessert to be a pale pinkish colour but the colour was more of greyish/taupe and didn’t look at all appetising, but it did have a really nice fruity smell to it.  The first reaction we had was that it had quite a strange taste to it, you could taste the fruit but you were left with quite a sour aftertaste and a coated feeling in your mouth.  The consistency was quite runny and there were a few raspberry seeds in it.  I would say that it was comparible to a fat free yoghurt.

We preferred the Alpro Soya dairy free yoghurts that we eat on a regular basis.  However, for people that aren’t able to eat dairy or soya then this would be an alternative for them.  It contains 100% natural ingredients which is always a good thing.  It also doesn’t need to be kept in a fridge.

As we have commented before, I guess what you need to bear in mind when eating this or any other free-from alternative, is that someone who hasn’t tasted the original product doesn’t have a direct comparison or a pre-conceived expectation as we did. It must be very difficult to produce an exact replica of a product, so although this product wasn’t for us, it certainly won’t stop us from trying other Redwood Co. products.
