This is a fairly new product which Kara launched in February 2012. Kara is a family owned company who have been farming coconuts in their groves in East Sumatra, Indonesia, since 1986 from which they produce a range of coconut based products.  Their coconuts are packed within hours of picking on a daily basis which they claim guarantees that their products are of the very highest quality.  Kara Dairy Free is packed in the EU using freshly pressed coconut milk sourced from their farm.

Kara state that their Chocolate and calcium dairy free coconut milk is “a delicious, refreshing, drink for all lovers of chocolate milk looking for a healthier dairy free option”.

Ingredients: Filtered water, Coconut milk (6.8%), Sugar, Maltodextrin, Cocoa powder (1.3%), Calcium phosphate, Thickener: Carrageenan, Emulsifier: Sucrose ester, Natural flavourings, Sea salt, Vitamins: D2, B12.

Their allergy advice states “fortified with calcium and Vitamins D2 and B12 and is free of lactose, dairy protein, soya or gluten”.

The Verdict

Kara dairy free chocolate is long life so doesn’t need to be refrigerated and can be served hot or cold, we chose to put ours in the fridge so that we could drink it chilled.

The consistency of this chocolate milk is perfectly smooth and just the right thickness, it isn’t watery like other non dairy milks we have tried. It smells really nice & chocolatey and tastes really refreshing, it isn’t too rich and isn’t sickly or heavy tasting whatsoever and there were no ‘nasty’ bits floating in it.  The whole family tested this (5 of us) and we all agreed that it was very moreish, in fact as soon as one of my daughter’s finished her glass she immediately asked for a second one!  After trying this chilled, I then heated some up in the microwave and we tried that, it was also delicious when hot and still refreshing.  We tested this yesterday and my youngest daughter hasn’t stopped pestering to try the other Kara Coconut milk we have in the fridge since.

It might be free from lactose, dairy, gluten and soya but it certainly isn’t taste free.  This was a huge hit with us.  We all agreed that we would definitely have this again and those of  us that can have lactose decided that we would take this over a dairy chocolate milk anyday.  In our opinion this is an excellent product that is both healthy and extremely tasty.  We are coconut milk converts!

We were very kindly given this product to bring home and review when we visited the Kara stand at The Allergy Show.  I have just been to my local Booths supermarket but unfortunately they didn’t have any so I will have to look elsewhere to buy some more.

  1. This Kara chocolate flavour coconut drink is delicious hot or cold. I drank this as a substitute to hot chocolate and it was great! I poured it into a mug and then microwaved it for 1 min 15 sec. YUM!
