The following product review is for Allergy Riders, a clever and innovative food labelling system to cater for children with allergies.
Allergy Riders were the brainchild of Australian mum Amy Dowling who’s son has food allergies. Anyone who has a child with food allergies will know that awful feeling you get right in the pit of your stomach when you hand their welfare over to someone else. A simple mistake could result in life threatening consequences.
I first discovered Allergy Riders when I was digging around on the Internet. I contacted Amy to tell her how fab I thought her idea was and she very kindly sent me some samples over from Australia to take a look at and review.
What are they? I hear you ask. Well I will cut the waffling and get down to the product.
There are 2 product lines, the baking cups and the flags. There are seven types of baking cup, each colour coded and clearly labelled to alert you to it’s suitability and denote each allergen. There are also seven types of flag, which like the baking cups are clearly labelled and colour coded. The colours correspond on the flags and the baking cups.
The range includes:
- I’m Dairy Free – Turquoise
- I’m Egg & Dairy Free – Green
- I’m Dairy & Gluten Free – Blue
- I’m Gluten Free – Orange
- No Eggs Here -Yellow
- I’m Vegan – Purple
- No Nuts Here – Pink
Allergy Riders are obviously great for cakes but have many more uses. They are excellent for parties or sleepovers, they will save children with allergies and intolerances from feeling awkward as it will remove the need for them to keep asking if they can or can’t eat the food on offer. The baking cups can also be used for sweets, popcorn, lollies, nibbles etc. The flags can be used in cakes, pizza, sandwiches, sausages, hot dogs, pies – the list is endless. Not only useful for party hosts but would be great for caterers and allergy friendly bakeries.
Pack of 50 baking cups
Pack of 25 food flags
I think these are absolutely fantastic. I can’t rate them highly enough. Such a simple but effective and fun way of identifying food suitable to your dietary requirements. I am always on the look out for products that make life easier for allergy sufferers and these definitely do just that.
In my opinion every household that has children should have some of these, your child may not have allergies but if you invite other children round or organise a party the chances are nowadays that there will be someone in attendance with a special dietary requirement. This product not only gives the allergic or intolerant child some independence but also reassures parents that their child’s health situation is being taken seriously.
Amy Dowling who invented these is a nominee for the AusMumpreneur Awards 2011. Good look Amy, you deserve it!
